Films on the application of Paulo Freire’s pedagogical approach
The first five films focus on Jan-Erik Perneman’s experiences of working with Paulo Freire, including his interpretations and implementations of Freire’s pedagogy. Films 6:1 and 6:2 are a recording of a Zoom meeting in which we discuss Jan-Erik’s “Andean experience”—a project that led to three Indigenous peoples in Bolivia founding their own universities, each rooted in their own culture and language. In this context, the term ”pluriversity” is used as an alternative to ”university”. Leonel Ceruto, representing one of the Indigenous groups, also participates.
The participants in the films speak freely, in spoken language. This spoken language has been edited into a correct written language. This enables viewers around the world to receive the subtitles in their own formal written language.
The films therefore have subtitles. You select these via the gear wheel (settings).
Turn on subtitles and select “Swedish”. (Step 1)
If you want the text in a language other than Swedish, go in a second time under the same gear wheel and now select “Translate automatically” and select the language you want. (Step 2)
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 1
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 1 “I Never Understood Why” 50 min
A personal story about a lifelong work based on Paulo Freire’s pedagogical thoughts.
Jan-Erik Perneman presents over fifty years of professional experience inspired by Paulo Freire. This is done in chronological order where the viewer gets to follow the first meeting between Paulo Freire, “Pedagogy of the Oppressed” and Jan-Erik through all the different forms of applications that followed. It is about how Freire was introduced to Sweden, about the various initiatives that were taken in Freire’s spirit and about the various reports and books that were produced.
In addition, the work of the IDAC group in Geneva, where Freire ultimately ended up after his exile, is presented. The film ends with a presentation of the work FoNoLa-Sol (Popular Education Nordic Latin America, Solidarity) and the collaboration with Linköping University and Högskolan Väst. The reports that Jan-Erik refers to can be found at www.forskargruppenintra.se. “Freire library”.
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 2
Pedagogy of Liberation Film 2 “Now I understand a little more why” 33 min
Jan-Erik’s understanding of Paulo Freire’s pedagogical ideas in the form of an image and a model. Jan-Erik Perneman presents his way of understanding and working based on Paulo Freire’s theory and philosophy. Here the viewer also gets to meet Freire through Jan-Erik’s own meetings with him. Jan-Erik presents his understanding of the inner core, the “point of growth”, in pedagogical practice. The film ends with a conversation between Jan-Erik Perneman, Hannes Lundkvist and Per Apelmo around some central questions for those who want to work in the spirit of Freire.
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 3
Pedagogy of Liberation Film 3 Paulo Freire and the liberating pedagogy 55 min
A conversation between Jan-Erik Perneman, Per Apelmo and Hannes Lundkvist about the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire.
The conversation between Jan-Erik Perneman, Hannes Lundkvist and Per Apelmo continues. Jan-Erik introduces Paulo Freire and his background. This is followed by a conversation about the work that formed the basis for what eventually resulted in the book “Pedagogy for the Oppressed” – a script that was completed at Harvard before Freire ended up at the World Council of Churches in Geneva. There, the IDAC group was formed, consisting of people who had worked with Freire and who were also forced to leave their countries. The film delves into some central concepts and approaches in Freire’s pedagogy. At the end of the film, Jan-Erik is asked: “How did Freire affect you so badly?” For those who have seen film 1, this will be a repetition but also a slightly different description of why the encounter with Freire’s thoughts became so important for Jan-Erik.
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 4
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 4
Dreams come true and the challenges of leadership – the example of Bolivia 31 min

This resulted, among other things, in three universities being started in collaboration with three different groups of indigenous people in Bolivia. Jan-Erik presents the work regarding its background and organization. The presentation is followed by a conversation between Jan-Erik, Hannes Lundkvist and Per Apelmo. They reflect on leadership and the leadership role in the footsteps of Freire’s thoughts.
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 5
Pedagogy of Liberation Film 5 See – Name – Act 36 min
A summary and deepening of the understanding of Freire’s thoughts. In a lecture, Jan-Erik Perneman presents his understanding of Paulo Freire’s pedagogical approach based on its purpose of “See – Name – Act”; to keep process and structure, respectively the abstract and the concrete, together in an educational process. In addition, a few words about education as a political act and where Freire drew his theoretical and philosophical inspiration. Here are presented more books that Freire wrote, as well as books that were written about Freire. The lecture ends with thoughts about challenges in today’s society.
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 6:1
Pedagogy of Liberation Film 6:1 The Andean Experience – Part 1, 37 min
A conversation between Jan-Erik Perneman and Lionel Ceruto. Film 6:1 is an edited recording that was made via zoom in May 2023. We in the INTRA research group had learned that Lionel Cerruto was visiting Helsinki. We decided to gather some interested people for a meeting with Leonel. In film 6:1, Jan Erik Perneman connects back to the Andean experience that was touched upon in film 4. The connection takes the form of a conversation between Jan Erik and Lionel.
The Pedagogy of Liberation Film 6:2
Pedagogy of Liberation Film 6:2 The Andean Experience – Part 2 , 75 min
Exchanges of ideas based on the Andean experience.
In Film 6:2, which was recorded at the same time as 6:1, it is an edited compilation of the exchange of thoughts that occurred between the participants after we listened to the conversation between Jan Erik and Leonel. This conversation touched on the societal challenges that we are faced with in various ways in today’s Sweden. We believe that what we discussed can be recognized by more people and that it is therefore of interest to share.
